One of the objectives of Green C Ports project is to measure and to reduce the impact of port operations to the port and the surrounding areas in terms of the air quality.
In this regard, Fundación Valenciaport with the support of the Port Authority of Valencia have succeeded in assembling a ship plume monitoring camera manufactured by Sensia Solutions.
The camera will monitor the ships’ funnels port calling at the Port of Valencia from a distance between 300 to 500 meters. It will determine the emission factor indicators of the gases emitted such as Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and unburned hydrocarbons (including methane CH4). This will allow to control and reduce the environmental impact generated by these ships. The camera is already at the port ready to be used in the first measurement campaigns.
The data gathered by these sensors will be sent to the Port Environmental Performance (PEP) platform in order to be analyzed and correlated with other sensors’ data. This data will serve also to create a history of ships’ measurements that will be used to make near future predictions about ports’ air quality status.
